BAIRD'S SANDPIPER - Belhaven Bay / White Sands - November / December 2009
On the 7th November 2009 this juvenile Baird's Sandpiper was found in Belhaven Bay (Dunbar) by Colin Davison, Calum Scott and Keith Gillon. Despite being only the sixth record of this species in the county, most keen birdwatchers would have already had this on their lists following the long staying bird at Threipmuir / Bavelaw (Pentlands) in Autumn 2003.
During its stay at Belhaven which lasted until the 11th, the bird was very elusive at times and often quite flighty. It did however have the habit of being on its own and away from the other small waders in the area, this was the case again when it was refound (again by Colin Davison) at White Sands Bay on the 30th November. Here it stayed, and for the most part showed extremely well throughout December and gave year listers the chance to kick start 2010 with a good bird.
